Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the plans for The Line development at NEOM.
The prince said the design would specify the internal structure of the multileveled vertical city and solve many problems of traditional flat cities. The innovative design should achieve harmony between urban development and the preservation of nature.
According to Arab News, Prince Mohammed launched the initial idea and vision of the city that reinvents the concept of urban development in January 2021.
“At NEOM, we strive to be at the forefront of providing new and innovative solutions, and today we are determined to implement the idea of ‘Building to the Top’ through a team led by NEOM and a group of the brightest minds,” the crown prince said. During Monday's announcement, Prince Mohammed said The Line would achieve “ideal living” and address the urgent challenges facing humanity."
Following the announcement, we learn that The Line embodies urban communities of the future — as an environment free from roads, cars, and emissions.
The project will run on 100% renewable energy and prioritize people’s health and wellbeing above anything else. This concept of a vertically-layered city that gives people the ability to move seamlessly in three dimensions to access various amenities is called “Zero Gravity Urbanism”.
The Line will have an outer mirror facade that will allow it to completely blend with nature. The vertical city will be built on 34 square kilometers and be able to accommodate 9 million residents.
