Ocean-Based Conservation In The Age Of COVID-19

Lifeguard Michaela Morris is using digital means to share her love of the ocean and inspire lasting environmental change.

Michaela Morris is a lifeguard and Ocean Fellow with Environment America who’s very passionate about ocean-based conservation.

She usually makes interpersonal connections with people she meets on beaches as a lifeguard. Now, she’s using digital means to share her love of the ocean and inspire lasting environmental change.

Working on a webinar series called “Our Amazing Oceans,” Michaela soon realized that reciting facts and figures can only take you so far.

As she explains in Environment America, “On the beach, people make their own stories, which can stick with them for a lifetime. Whales breach, gulls steal sandwiches and seals pop their sleek heads out of water. These sights often inspire a sense of wonder at the ocean -- and curiosity about the amazing animals that swim in its depths. Our best webinars foster the same sense of wonder by using stories to recreate that in-person ocean experience.

Now you can bet I can always get behind ocean-based activism, especially when it involves saving whales and other precious forms of marine life.
