MAD Premieres Solar-Powered ‘Train Station in the Forest’

The Chinese city of Jiaxing will get a train station that will be topped with a lush borderless park aimed to bring nature back to the urban landscape.

The Chinese city of Jiaxing will get an innovative transportation hub this summer. The so-called “train station in the forest” will be topped with a lush borderless park aimed to bring nature back to the urban landscape.

The 35.4-hectare project is designed by an international design firm MAD Architects.

Inhabitat reports that the new Jiaxing Train Station will be powered with solar panels; include a pair of plazas, a commercial zone, and renovation of the adjacent People’s Park.

Currently under construction with completion expected by July 2021, Jiaxing’s “Train Station in the Forest” will blend MAD Architects’ signature futuristic forms with designs rooted in the city’s historic and cultural contexts. In addition to green-roofed, disc-shaped transit buildings located at the site’s transportation hub in the south, the project will feature a one-to-one scale rebuilding of the historic Jiaxing Train Station.

This historic station was built at the beginning of the 20 century to serve as an important junction for the Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway Line but was destroyed in 1937.

The old station building will be faithfully recreated with the help of scholars and experts in heritage architecture, to serve as the Jiaxing Railway History Museum.
