Nest Renew Program by Google Helps You Use More Clean Energy

If your electricity comes from both renewable and fossil fuel sources, the size of your carbon footprint depends on when you put demands on the grid.

Turn on the oven when the wind is blowing or take a shower when the sun is shining, and the energy used to run your tankless water heater is more likely to come from renewable sources.

According to Treehugger, homeowners can now use Nest Renew to lower their carbon footprint by shifting some of their energy use to periods when grid electricity comes from emission-free sources.

statement
“Nest Renew piggybacks on Google's 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy goal of using carbon-free electricity at every hour at all of its data centers and office campuses hubs around the world. Like Nest Renew customers, Google is shifting the energy demands of its operations to align with the times of day when energy sources are the cleanest.“

If you live in areas with different time-of-use electric energy rates, no problem. Nest Renew can save you money by using energy at less expensive times.

For example, peak energy demands often come in the early evening, when people return from work and fire up their air conditioner, TVs, and other appliances.

Unfortunately, this is also the time when solar energy goes offline, so utilities need to rely on fossil fuel sources.

A smart thermostat, like the Nest Renew can fire up the air conditioning while the sun is still shining, so you can return home to an already comfortable house that relies more on clean energy.
