The Scottish government is rolling out plans to power 8 million homes with renewable energy by 2030, creating environmental jobs in the process.

Following the devastating effects of COVID-19, Scotland has been searching for a way to renew its economy and get the ball rolling once again.

It may just have found it — renewable energy.

The UK (which includes Scotland) is already renowned for its offshore wind power, but the Scottish government is rolling out plans to power 8 million homes with renewable energy by 2030, aiming for 11 gigawatts of renewable energy thanks to hundreds of new wind turbines.

This will create environmental jobs in Scotland, helping to recover both the local economy and reduce the country’s dependency on fossil fuels going forward.

As explained in The Independent:

“Scotland’s energy minister, Paul Wheelhouse, said the plan marked “a pivotal moment” for the expansion of Scotland’s offshore operations. He said: “Our seas are host to some of the best offshore wind resources in the world, and our ambition to capitalise on our offshore wind generation capacity is part of the bold action we are taking to support economic recovery and become a net-zero society.”

I’m glad to hear this — the world is suffering from both COVID-19 and climate change at the moment, but Nicola Sturgeon and her ministers are looking to tackle both issues in one fell swoop.

Hopefully, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will take note.
