Newark's E-Waste Rules Go Back Further Than You'd Think

Newark sits at the foot of the Dumbarton Bridge, part of the Tri-City area with Fremont and Union City. About 47,500 people live here.

The city’s economy has been tied to the Bay since the 1860s, when the Plummer Brothers opened one of the area’s first salt works along the Newark shoreline. Those operations eventually became Leslie Salt, then Cargill — which still refines salt from Bay ponds near Newark today.

That history shows up in how the city handles waste now. Newark’s Green Newark program runs local recycling and composting guidance, and its Climate Action Newark plan sets targets for cutting emissions from transportation, buildings, and solid waste.

Electronics fall right into that. California’s E-Waste Recycling Act keeps computers, monitors, and TVs out of the regular trash — they have to go through a certified recycler. Alameda County’s StopWaste agency backs this up locally: their RE:Source directory, the county’s own recycling guide, lists GreenCitizen as a free drop-off option for Newark residents.

Newark’s newer industries — manufacturing, biotech, food production, logistics — sit right next to that older salt-industry history. Recycling electronics properly fits both eras of the city.

GreenCitizen: Computer Recycling for Newark Residents and Businesses

Our Burlingame EcoCenter is about 23 miles from Newark — roughly a 30-minute drive across the Dumbarton Bridge and up US-101.

GreenCitizen has recycled Bay Area electronics since 2005, when James Kao founded the company on Earth Day. We’ve worked with 75,019 businesses and 414,161 individuals, recycling 34,006,783 pounds of electronics.

Every major item gets tracked through AGTAMS, our internal accountability system, from pickup through final processing. We only work with US-based partners certified to R2 or e-Stewards. For devices carrying sensitive data, our destruction methods follow DoD and NIST guidelines.

Full chain of custody

Every major item gets a unique AGTAMS asset ID the moment it comes through our doors, so we can show exactly where it went — from pickup to final processing.

R2 & e-Stewards only

We vet every downstream partner against R2 and e-Stewards standards before working with them. Everything stays in the U.S. — nothing gets exported.

Data destroyed, not just deleted

Hard drives get wiped or physically destroyed following DoD 5220.22-M and NIST SP 800-88 methods. Ask for a Certificate of Destruction if you need one on file.

No surprise fees

Laptops and desktops recycle free for qualifying condition. Anything with a cost gets confirmed with you before we process it — never after.

Recycling electronics is no longer burdensome thanks to this place! They are extremely convenient and the person who helped me out at the front was very kind and courteous. I pulled up and dropped off a bunch of computers I had lying around and they are able to destroy the hard drive for me and recycle my computer. They also took a bunch of smaller electronics from me. Extremely glad I found them!!!

The team at GreenCitizen is absolutely stellar. Today, I went to Green Citizen for the first time to recycle my monitor, hard drives, and cell phones. They recycled all my items (some for free) for a very small fee. The team member who assisted me today was very friendly and took the time to explain the different services they offer. I’ll be coming back for sure!

You simply pull up in your car, someone will come out to help process your drop off. Every time has been less than 10 minutes and very pleasant customer service. Safe, quick, efficient, no hassle. Wonderful.
