Volkswagen is increasing its renewable powering globally, but especially in Europe. In 2020, their factories in China went from 76% to 91% renewable power, while in Europe, it went from 80% to 95%.
What’s more, ten of their factories are now 100% powered by renewable energy. Volkswagen aims to be 100% powered by renewable energy by 2023.
According to Clean Technica, 8 EU production sites and 2 sites outside of the EU have converted to being powered by electricity from renewable sources.
The EU factories which are renewably powered are located in Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Czech Republic, and Austria. The ones outside of Europe are located in Mexico and the USA.
Volkswagen Group Board Member Oliver Blume noted: “The transformation of the Volkswagen Group into a CO2-neutral company has gained momentum. In this context, supplying our plants with renewable electricity is an important part of the overall decarbonization strategy. We are consistently implementing our plans together with all brands and regions, and in 2020 we have already come very close to the target lines that we actually only marked for 2023 and 2030. That’s an encouraging milestone.”
Hopefully, Volkswagen’s other factories will follow their European factories. I look forward to seeing their reports for 2022 and 2023. Let’s hope other car manufacturers will take a page from their book as well.
