What Laptop Brands And Models Do We Accept?

We accept all laptop brands and form factors at our Burlingame EcoCenter—including (but not limited to):

    • Apple: MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac
    • Business Laptops: Dell Latitude, Lenovo ThinkPad, HP EliteBook
    • Other Common Devices: Chromebooks, Microsoft Surface, and gaming laptops (e.g., Alienware, Razer)

If you don’t see your model listed, bring it—chances are we accept it. For unusual devices or bulk drop-offs, contact us first, and we’ll confirm the best handling path.

Important: Please disable BIOS/EFI locks and remove any DEP/MDM/Remote Management profiles. If you’re recycling a MacBook, sign out of your Apple ID, turn off Find My, and remove Activation Lock.

Accepted Laptop Conditions

We accept laptops in a wide range of conditions—from working devices to non-functional units and incomplete laptops (missing chargers/accessories). If a device has battery damage (especially a swollen battery) or device locks (Activation Lock/MDM), please contact us first so we can route it correctly.

How to Prepare Your Laptop Before Recycling

1. Secure Your Data (Even If You’re Busy)

If you can, back up anything you need and sign out of key accounts (email, cloud storage, password managers).

If you can’t wipe the device, we offer secure data destruction services. Functional drives can be wiped, and physical destruction is available for certified needs.

Documentation: Customers can request a Certificate of Destruction (and related documentation) as part of service packages.

2. Remove Device Locks (Required For Many Apple And Managed Devices)

Device locks can prevent processing and reuse. Before recycling, please remove:

    • Apple Locks: Sign out of Apple ID/iCloud and turn off Find My (Activation Lock)
    • Management Locks: Remove DEP/ABM enrollment, MDM profiles, or Remote Management (e.g., Jamf, Kandji, Intune)
    • BIOS/EFI Passwords: Clear any firmware passwords where applicable

3. Battery Safety Notes (Especially Swollen Batteries)

Lithium batteries require careful handling. If the laptop is warped, the trackpad is lifting, or the case looks “puffed,” the battery may be swollen. Tell staff immediately at drop-off so it can be handled safely.

We prioritize the best responsible outcome: reuse when appropriate (after secure data handling), then responsible recycling for end-of-life devices. Materials are recovered safely and hazardous components are kept out of landfills.
