Climate organization files a lawsuit against the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for failing to adequately protect the arctic polar bears in Alaska.

The Center for Biological Diversity is planning to sue U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for failing to adequately protect the arctic polar bears from and exploration projects in the Western Arctic. They have filed a notice of intent under the Endangered Species Act and the notice will still need to pass 60 days before becoming a formal lawsuit.

The Peregrine Exploration Program is a five-year-long exploration project that will try to find new oil and gas fields in Alaska. The intended dig site is in the Alaska National Petroleum Reserve, which is located near the Colville River.

However, the concern is that the excessive noise from the drilling site will cause disruptive noise pollution in the polar bear habitats in the area.

This unthoughtful program was first sanctioned by the Trump Administration. The locals were hoping that the Biden Administration will revert the decision. But even the “eco-conscious” current government is not paying much attention to it.

Every new oil well in the Arctic is another step toward the polar bear’s extinction. Biden should be phasing out oil and gas activity in the Arctic, not flouting key environmental laws to let oil companies search and drill for more oil in this beautiful, increasingly fragile ecosystem.

The concerned polar bear habitat is quite vulnerable. Only about 900 polar bears live in the Southern Beaufort Sea area. If we don’t take the necessary measurements, the habitat might witness a disaster in the near future.
