The governor of New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grisham, has introduced legislation that will offer zero-interest loans to help with the repair and rebuilding of infrastructure damaged by wildfires and flooding.
These kinds of incidents have been happening increasingly often, and it is making it ever more difficult for local governments to find the necessary and affordable funding to fix the damage. An AP report had some interesting details about the available funding.
“The state law just signed sets aside $100 million in loans for counties, cities and municipalities to begin work on projects that could include a water treatment plant in Mora County or roads, bridges and fences in Las Vegas, where thousands of residents evacuated last spring.”
Not only will this ensure that critical infrastructure is rebuilt, but it will deliver employment opportunities for thousands of people at a critical time.
The interesting thing will be whether these new projects will also include plans for making the infrastructure more robust to future climate events. And it will be critical that all the plans are made in eco-friendly ways so that the solutions don’t become part of the problem.
