According to Reuters, their services include a widely popular messaging app WeChat, games, and cloud-based services.
Tencent said they plan to use green energy for all of their electricity needs by 2030. They aim to lower the energy use per unit of output and increase the use of renewable energy.
“Tencent itself wants to achieve carbon neutrality," said Xu Hao, a vice president of the firm's sustainable social value organization, who leads its green initiatives. “And ... we also hope to be able to support the country's overall transformation to become carbon neutral."
The company will start green power trading and start investments in renewable energy. They will try to influence their consumers to be more eco-friendly as well.
Currently, China’s tech firms are largely using an energy system that’s coal-dependent, and only few of them plan to switch to renewable energy sources. Tencent’s plan is a step in the right direction.
China also said they plan to be carbon neutral by 2060, which might make the country’s biggest firms switch to renewable energy and try to reach net-zero as well.
