Sustainability in Milpitas: Policies, Programs, and the Future of Electronics Recycling

Milpitas is more than just a Silicon Valley city—it’s a rising leader in sustainability. With over 80,000 residents and a thriving commercial base, Milpitas has woven environmental responsibility into its urban identity. Tech giants like Cisco Systems and KLA Corporation call this city home, making responsible e-waste management a vital part of local business operations.

Environmental responsibility is a shared value here. In 2019, the City of Milpitas revised its Climate Action Plan (CAP) to serve as a bold, updated framework for climate-forward policy and community programs. The Milpitas City Council adopted ambitious targets—reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 36% by 2030, 80% by 2040, and reaching full carbon neutrality by 2045.

To hit these milestones, the CAP focuses on six key emissions sources:

  • Residential and commercial building energy (natural gas and electricity)
  • On-road transportation, especially single-occupant gasoline vehicles
  • Solid waste sent to landfill
  • Off-road vehicles and fuel-based equipment
  • Water supply and wastewater treatment

These efforts are deeply tied to Milpitas’ Zero Waste goals and long-term sustainability vision.

Electronics recycling plays a critical role in this transformation. Residents and businesses are urged to dispose of e-waste—like laptops, desktop computers, and any battery-powered devices—through certified programs. The city provides access to free e-waste recycling at official sites and participates in regional collection events to divert harmful materials from landfills.

Guided by California’s Electronic Waste Recycling Act, Milpitas ensures proper e-waste handling isn’t just encouraged—it’s the standard. From award-winning municipal programs to robust corporate sustainability efforts, this city is building a cleaner future, one device at a time.

With forward-thinking policies, community engagement, and tech-driven leadership, computer recycling in Milpitas is more than a service—it’s part of a citywide movement.

Milpitas Makes Sustainability Count with GreenCitizen — Laptops, Desktops, and More

Milpitas may be known for its tech-savvy spirit and cultural diversity, but its commitment to environmental action runs just as deep. Tucked at the crossroads of innovation, this city is making bold moves toward sustainability—and electronics recycling is at the center of it all.

Since 2005, GreenCitizen has proudly served the Bay Area, helping over 70,000 businesses and 400,000 residents recycle responsibly—and keeping 32 million pounds of electronics out of landfills. Milpitas has consistently contributed to that mission, proving that environmental leadership can thrive alongside industrial growth.

We’ve supported Milpitas residents and businesses through our previous locations—at 5155 Stevens Creek Blvd, Ste 100, Santa Clara; 2500 W El Camino Real, Suite D, Mountain View; 4500 El Camino Real, Los Altos; 161 Homer Avenue, Downtown Palo Alto; and 3180 Park Boulevard, Palo Alto (behind the former Fry’s Electronics).

And now, we are operating from our flagship EcoCenter at 1831 Old Bayshore Hwy, Suite 2, Burlingame, CA 94010.

Recycling a laptop, desktop, or any device with a battery or plug? We’ve made it easy, secure, and environmentally sound. Milpitas businesses can schedule our reliable pickup service, while residents are welcome to drop off electronics at their convenience. Every item is tracked with our GreenCitizen Total Accountability Management System (GTAMS) to ensure nothing ends up where it shouldn’t. Need certified data destruction? We handle that too—meeting strict compliance and privacy standards.

Best part? Qualified laptops and desktops are recycled for free. If you live or work in Milpitas and want your electronics handled the right way—GreenCitizen is your trusted local partner in sustainability.

On Electronics Recycling Drop-Off

I love that there is a place to recycle electronic items responsibly. No overseas shipments; all are disassembled here and taken care of in an environmentally sound way. The small price they charge is totally worth the environmental impact. It’s not realistic to think there is no cost for safe disposal. Very helpful staff, easy to drive in, safe and fast. I appreciate the data destruction option, too.
