The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will lease out seven large areas to wind power developers in the latest step to promote offshore wind energy. This is a major step towards the decarbonization of the energy sector by 2035.
The goal is to have enough energy generation by 2030 to power 10 million homes along the East coast. That’s equivalent to 30 gigawatts, and it comes with a huge boost to the employment market as well.
Treehugger has reported why this is such an important step.
“The U.S. is well behind other countries when it comes to offshore wind, with just one operating offshore wind farm in Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island, with a capacity of 30 megawatts, and a smaller pilot project off the coast of Virginia.”
Two of the major advantages of these projects is that they don’t encounter complaints from local residents living close to wind farms. And there is also a much more sustainable amount of wind flow over the Ocean.
That should mean that there is less risk of reduced energy production due to lack of wind.
