1.3 to 1.5 billion cows on the planet and each of them release 30 to 50 gallons of methane into the atmosphere every day! Cow burps and farts — not so innocent after all!

Bill Gates announced he’s to invest in an Australian start-up called Rumin8. The start-up is working on creating a seaweed-based feed that has the potential to reduce the methane emissions cows produce through burps and farts.

According to CNN, methane is a potent greenhouse gas. It lasts less time in the atmosphere compared to carbon dioxide but has 84 times higher global warming potential over 20 years. Moreover, one-third of methane emissions worldwide come from livestock, especially beef and cows.
statement
“Microbes in cows’ stomachs produce methane as the animals digest food, but when seaweed is added to their feed, it has been shown to significantly cut down the amount of planet-warming gas released. A 2021 study found that giving cows small amounts of seaweed over several months saw their methane emissions fall by more than 80%.”

Rumin8 manufactures feed from a bioactive ingredient found in red seaweed. They claim this can reduce methane emissions by 95%. Rumin8 produces the ingredient in the lab, which keeps the cost low.

The company is aiming to have small quantities of cow food available by the end of this year. They also addressed the accusations that this could distract from the root cause of the livestock climate problem, but the CEO says their solution is global and will have a massive impact on global emissions.
