Global Concrete and Cement Association announces they plan to become carbon-neutral by 2050, despite projections showing concrete use will grow.

The cement and Association industry is responsible for about 80% of CO2 emissions globally.

Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) is in charge of about 50% of the cement production worldwide, and its headquarters are in London.

According to Treehugger, GCCA announced their plans for a net-zero future, ahead of the UK’s COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland.

GCCA plans to be carbon-neutral by 2050 to limit global warming.

statement
"The industry has already made progress with proportionate reductions of CO2 emissions in cement production of 20% over the last three decades. This roadmap highlights a significant acceleration of decarbonization measures achieving the same reduction in only a decade. It outlines a proportionate reduction in CO2 emissions of 25% associated with concrete by 2030 from today (2020) as a key milestone on the way to achieving full decarbonization by the mid-century.”

Moreover, GCCA plans to prevent the production of 5 billion tons of CO2 by 2030. They hope to achieve this by being thermally efficient and using alternative fuels, such as waste materials.

Even though GCCA predicts the concrete use will grow to 20 billion cubic meters per year, they hope to use limestone, sand, and aggregate to produce it.
