ECOS Laundry Detergent Review: What You Need To Know Before You Buy
When I was young and needed to wash clothes, I’d take whatever cheap detergent you could give me. However, as I’ve gotten older and become a much more eco-conscious individual, I’m willing to stretch my budget a little in the pursuit of earth friendly products.
And yes, that includes eco laundry detergent.
After learning that many clothes detergents on the market were non-biodegradable and bad for sensitive skin (which I have), I decided to find an earth friendly liquid laundry detergent that I can use at home.
I soon discovered ECOS Laundry Detergent, so I tried it so I can see for myself if it’s really as eco-friendly as other reviews make it out to be. Here's my review.
Things To Consider Before Buying An Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergent
When you’re buying an eco-friendly detergent product, there are certain criteria you should look for in the brand:
Surfactants are substances which are commonly used in cleaning products to help remove soil and dirt from clothes. However, these substances can be toxic to fish when they get into the water system because they get inside their gills and stop them from breathing easily in the water.
The best natural detergent contains zero (or very few) surfactants.
Manufacturers should be practising what they preach, and this applies to their packaging too. Ideally, the product bottles should be made from recycled plastic and the bottles themselves should be recyclable.
ECOS bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic and they are also indeed recyclable.
Some products contain chemicals called “stilbenes” which help to make garments look brighter. You’ll often find these in mainstream detergents, but the stilbenes are non-biodegradable and toxic to fish, so eco-friendly detergents like ECOS do not contain them.
What is the ECOS Liquid Laundry Detergent?
ECOS Liquid Detergent is a plant based earth friendly laundry soap made by an eco-friendly company called ECOS that specializes in plant derived products that are kind to the environment.
The business is a majority women-owned family-run business which has been around for 50+ years. They make all of their earth friendly products in the USA at 4 facilities, all of which are carbon neutral and run on renewable energy.
One of their most popular earth friendly products, ECOS detergent uses plant-derived surfactants to wash your garments in a more eco-friendly manner. They claim that the formula is regularly reviewed by chemists and is pH balanced so it won’t do any major damage to mother Earth.
According to ECOS, you can use this detergent on all temperatures, and it’s suitable for both colors and whites. Supposedly, this detergent is suitable for your everyday washing needs.
ECOS Laundry Detergent Benefits
First of all, I have to be very careful with laundry detergents, as I can break out in rashes if I choose something too harsh. Fortunately, this one was perfect for my skin since its formula is very gentle.
It’s also vegan and cruelty-free (it has the leaping bunny logo) and doesn’t contain any parabens, phosphates, or phthalates. For me, that’s a win-win.
I also liked that this product contains a built-in fabric softener, which made my clothes and my bed linen feel really nice after washing.
Because I wanted to get a second opinion for this review, I asked my uncle to try it out as well. He owns an RV, so he’s often washing his shirts out on the road. As such, he needs to be able to throw away the dirty water once he’s washed his clothes with it.
After he found out that this product is pH balanced and biodegradable, he said that he can now pour out his dirty water without feeling guilty.
Like him, I also don’t have to feel bad about polluting the local greywater facilities, which is great.
Aside from that, I found that this stuff can be used on both colors and whites, and at all temperatures. I don’t have time to be buying 50 different detergents every time I want to wash something, so I appreciate that this product can be used for basically all of my washing.

ECOS Laundry Detergent Shortfalls
If you’re battling really dirty clothes, this probably won’t do the trick. I found that out because I was wearing a plain white cotton t-shirt to a family barbeque when I accidentally spilled ketchup on myself while eating a hotdog.
I wore a plain white t-shirt to a barbeque. What was I thinking?
Anyway, after a couple of washes with ECOS, the stain was still there.
I ended up having to pre-treat the stained area. It wasn’t so bad, but I did have to put in a little extra effort.
I personally also found out that you need to use more liquid than the amount they recommend on the bottle. Using the recommended amount just weren't enough to clean the clothes enough and even left a bit of a musty smell.
To be fair, when I was still using normal detergents, I also used up more than the recommended amount that they say on their bottles as well.

Other People’s Thoughts
Although I thought this liquid laundry detergent eco product was good, I’m just one person! I decided to go looking online to find some other people’s opinions on this eco friendly clothes detergent. Here are some pretty balanced user reviews I found:
While I don't think this detergent gets out really dirty stains, it is a great detergent for ordinary laundry and smells wonderful. It didn't bother my sensitive skin, so I think that it rinses out well too. I will order it again.
We've used this brand for 10 years. Our laundry is clean and fresh. It is safe to use on silk, and tough to clean up your laundry. For very tough stains and soil, I pre-treat the dirty areas, pre-wash and then toss it in the laundry.
I buy these because I have chronic UTIs and infections. I also have an intolerance to chemicals. After doing a lot of research on detergent ingredients, I found this to less harmful as many others. However, this product isn't very good for getting any stains out of clothes. Will definitely need to pretreat any stains — even ones which usually wash right out.
ECOS Laundry Detergent: Is It Worth Buying?
ECOS is free and clear of most nasty ingredients, so I can say that it’s an excellent addition to a pantry of earth friendly products for any eco-conscious individual.
Regular detergents contain harsh chemicals that give people allergic reactions, but I’ve never experienced those with ECOS (probably because it’s made from plant-derived ingredients).
Other reviews say the same thing, so I’m confident that this is kind to people’s skin. Not only that — it's also made from pH-balanced biodegradable ingredients so you can be assured that this eco friendly product won’t pollute the Earth for hundreds of years.
