The world is in a position to limit global heating to less than 2C for the first time in history, according to an analysis of the net-zero pledges of the nations at the UN Cop26 summit.
According to the Guardian, how successful the world is at keeping the temperature under 2C depends on the nations implementing their pledges. Also, developing countries have warned that they won’t be able to implement the policies needed for this without financial and technical support.
People are currently facing heatwaves, floods, and storms because of the current 1.2C of heating. If this rises to 1.5C, the consequences will be even worse.
The scientists are optimistic and see the fact that governments have set specific targets as a huge improvement since the Paris agreement in 2015. However, it’s time for the pledges to be backed up by policies.
