February 18 is National Battery Day when we appreciate the convenience and comfort batteries provide to our everyday lives.

This year, a battery company announced going public, collection numbers were published for North America, and a lead-acid battery technology decided to enter a lithium-ion arena.

Li-Cycle Corp. will become a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

According to E-Scrap News, this company processes scrap batteries from electronics and other sources.

Headquartered in Toronto, Li-Cycle was acquired by a publicly traded special purpose acquisition company sponsored by Carnelian Energy Capital, which is based in Houston. Li-Cycle, which operates a hub-and-spoke model for battery processing, recently opened a new facility in Rochester, N.Y.

Another battery processor, Call2Recycle managed to collect 8.4 million pounds of batteries in the U.S. in 2020. This is 11% more than in 2019.

The company reported that COVID-19 and stay-at-home policies reduced the collection of rechargeable batteries, but the collection of single-use batteries more than made up for it.

Aqua Metals is the third battery company that announced its plans for 2021. This company that relies on lead-acid technology decided to move into the lithium-ion battery recycling business.
