The international nonprofit Ocean Global has launched a new program to empower individuals, communities, and businesses to provide solutions that protect the ocean.
The new program, called the Blue Standard, is a cross-industry standard that empowers industries to become leaders in sustainability and accountability for the planet and the ocean.
EcoWatch reports that the standard provides two core offerings: (1) a 3-star sustainability verification system for business operations and (2) product and packaging seals that guarantee plastic-free consumer goods.
"The infrastructure that makes our lives convenient is depleting that which keeps us alive," opens a video by Oceanic Global with scenes of plastic bottles and a cut-down forest. "But it doesn't have to be this way. Balance between industry and nature is possible. Solutions exist. And businesses can be agents of change."
But it doesn’t end there.
The program also creates tools for businesses to better communicate their sustainability initiatives and achievements to consumers, who in return can more easily identify businesses that share their own values.
The ultimate goal, according to Oceanic Global, is to create a balance between businesses and the natural world while making it easier and more sustainable for businesses to make positive changes.
At the moment there’s a strong focus on eliminating single-use plastics, but also using non-toxic cleaning products, sustainable food sourcing, responsible seafood procurement, energy consumption, low-impact travel, and more.
