While scientists in labs have been trying to come up with machines and technology to capture CO2 out of the atmosphere to then permanently store it, others have been looking at sustainable and practical solutions through the use of nature.
And, of course, I’m talking about the carefully and strategically planned use of reforestation projects.
Treehugger has reported some interesting research data.
“In addition to reducing carbon emissions, tree planting has been shown to increase biodiversity and strengthen ecosystems. Studies have also shown that forests are capable of providing 23 percent of the climate mitigation needed by 2030.”
The Plant Your Change initiative also supports this idea and has set a goal for individuals to plant 100 million trees by 2021. You can do this by planting new trees in your garden or by contributing to some of the initiative’s reforestation projects.
To date, the initiative has managed to support the planting of more than 3 million trees, and it’s a great example of how small actions by individuals can have a significant effect.
