Sunnyvale’s Playbook for Climate and Electronics Recycling Solutions
Sunnyvale is more than just a tech hub—it’s a city with a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability and forward-thinking climate action. With a population of over 150,000 and a strong commercial footprint led by technology and manufacturing sectors, Sunnyvale understands the environmental responsibilities that come with innovation and growth.
One of the city’s most pressing challenges is managing the rapid turnover of electronics like laptops and desktop computers. That’s where Sunnyvale’s bold leadership in e-waste and sustainability shines.
At the heart of this leadership is the Climate Action Playbook, Sunnyvale’s living framework to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions—by 56% by 2030 and 85% by 2045.
First adopted in 2019 as a successor to the Climate Action Plan 1.0 and its Climate Action Plan 2.0 update, the Playbook was most recently updated in June 2024 alongside the city’s Game Plan 2028. Much like a sports playbook, this plan outlines “Plays” (opportunities for action) and “Moves” (specific strategies) to help residents, businesses, and local agencies work together toward a more sustainable future.
Six core strategies power this Playbook:
- Promoting clean electricity
- Decarbonizing buildings
- Decarbonizing transportation and sustainable land use
- Managing resources sustainably
- Empowering our community
- Adapting to a changing climate
Electronics recycling—especially computers and laptops—fits squarely into these strategies. Whether it’s managing resources sustainably or adapting to rapid technological shifts, Sunnyvale supports smart disposal and responsible recycling to avoid harmful waste buildup.
California’s Electronic Waste Recycling Act also plays a pivotal role, requiring proper handling of covered electronic devices (CEDs) like monitors and laptops. This law ensures Sunnyvale residents and businesses treat their electronics not as trash, but as recoverable, reusable materials.
With community engagement, smart planning, and consistent legislative support, Sunnyvale is cementing its role as a sustainability leader—setting a citywide example for responsible e-waste management and environmental innovation.
GreenCitizen: Keeping Sunnyvale Clean with Smart, Local Electronics Recycling
Sunnyvale’s strong environmental values and leadership in tech innovation make it a natural champion in the effort to reduce electronic waste. GreenCitizen offers ethical, reliable computer recycling in Sunnyvale—serving both tech-driven businesses and eco-conscious residents who care about where their e-waste ends up.
Since 2005, we’ve helped over 70,000 Bay Area businesses and 400,000 residents recycle responsibly, diverting more than 32 million pounds of e-waste from landfills. From laptops and desktops to anything with a plug or battery, all electronics are recycled locally with full transparency—never exported or carelessly dumped.
Over the years, we’ve proudly served communities around Sunnyvale through locations like 2500 W El Camino Real, Suite D in Mountain View; 4500 El Camino Real in Los Altos; 161 Homer Avenue in downtown Palo Alto; and 3180 Park Boulevard in Palo Alto behind the former Fry’s Electronics store. These sites were vital to building a regional movement toward sustainable living.
Today, we serve Sunnyvale businesses and residents from our Burlingame EcoCenter at 1831 Old Bayshore Hwy Suite 2, Burlingame, CA 94010—just a quick drive up Highway 101 from Sunnyvale.
Businesses across the city can schedule convenient pickups; we will come to you at your convenience. We use the GreenCitizen Total Accountability Management System (GTAMS), a proprietary tracking tool that ensures every item is responsibly recycled within the United States. GTAMS provides complete transparency, eliminating the risk of illegal dumping or overseas export. You get certified data destruction, audit-ready reporting, and full compliance with California’s e-waste laws.

Your team picked up all our e-waste this morning. I’m sure you heard that we had a bit more than I originally thought. They were awesome about it.
Thank you so very much! That makes me really happy (not to mention my kids and sister who really want me to clean out the basement so they don’t have to do it). Thanks for all you’re doing to help our little planet!
Thanks for the e-mail. The pickup went very smooth, so just wanted to say your team did a great job all around.

Recycling electronics is no longer burdensome thanks to this place! They are extremely convenient and the person who helped me out at the front was very kind and courteous. I pulled up and dropped off a bunch of computers I had lying around and they are able to destroy the hard drive for me and recycle my computer. They also took a bunch of smaller electronics from me. Extremely glad I found them!!!
Every time I drop of recyclables, the staff at the Green Citizen are helpful, kind, and efficient. So easy. Really positive experiences every time I’ve gone over the last 8 years. I really appreciate the good work this Burlingame recycler does.
Been here multiple times for home and small business. So easy and simple to fill out the form and drop-off isn’t DIY, they come out to your car and take care of everything! Always recommended and candidly, better than my local Scavenger.
