Why Berkeley Leads in Sustainability and Electronics Recycling
Berkeley has long worn the badge of eco-leadership with pride. With a population of around 120,000 and industries ranging from education and biotech to green innovation, this forward-thinking city has sustainability woven into its DNA.
Local efforts toward zero waste aren’t just ideas on paper—they’re citywide movements. The City of Berkeley’s Climate Action Plan includes ambitious goals to eliminate waste at the source, limit single-use plastics, and expand access to recycling across both homes and businesses. The plan also pushes producers to take greater responsibility for product packaging and disposal.
UC Berkeley, a top university in the US, is a standout example with its Zero Waste Initiative. In 2022, the campus reduced landfill waste by over 1,000 tons compared to 2015. It now diverts 54% of all municipal waste and an impressive 90% of construction debris through reuse, recycling, and composting programs.
Businesses aren’t standing on the sidelines either. Corporate sustainability programs and regular e-waste events hosted across the city make responsible electronics disposal a community norm. California’s Electronic Waste Recycling Act adds another layer of accountability, making proper e-waste disposal—not just a good idea—but a legal requirement.
Berkeley Lab’s 17+ sustainability awards since 2019 speak volumes. From campus to commerce, this city is serious about change.
From laptops to desktops, computer recycling in Berkeley isn’t just an option—it’s part of the local culture. This is a city where sustainability is second nature, and where responsible e-waste disposal is more than a best practice—it’s a shared commitment.
From Campus to Commerce—Berkeley’s Go-To Partner for Computer Recycling
Berkeley has always been a city that leads by example—innovative, environmentally conscious, and committed to a cleaner future. From local homes to cutting-edge startups, the community embraces sustainable living as part of everyday life.
Since 2005, GreenCitizen has proudly served the Bay Area, and Berkeley continues to play a key role in our mission. We’ve helped 70,000 businesses and 400,000 residents divert more than 32 million pounds of e-waste from landfills—and that number keeps growing, thanks to eco-driven communities like Berkeley.
Over the years, our operations in Burlingame have evolved to better serve the region. We served Berkeley from our downtown Berkeley center at 1971 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA 94704 earlier; we now welcome Berkeley residents and businesses at our Burlingame EcoCenter: 1831 Old Bayshore Hwy, Suite 2, Burlingame, CA 94010.
Have an old desktop, laptop, or any device that plugs in or runs on batteries? We make it easy to recycle them responsibly. Berkeley businesses can schedule convenient pickups, and every item is tracked using our GreenCitizen Total Accountability Management System (GTAMS), which ensures full transparency through certified recycling. We also provide secure, unrecoverable data destruction to meet strict compliance and privacy standards.
And here’s the best part—eligible laptops and desktop computers can be recycled at no cost. If you’re in Berkeley and ready to make sure your electronics are handled the right way, GreenCitizen is ready to help.

LOVE the convenience of this fabulous recycling service in our community! anything we can do to keep Styrofoam and other unwanted electronic items out of our garbage is a blessing. I had a bunch of light fixtures that came in boxes with Styrofoam and I wasn’t sure what to do with them until I found Green Citizen. Right off the 101 and into their driveway for an easy drop off! The people working there are friendly and helpful too. I highly recommend this incredible business.
The team at GreenCitizen is absolutely stellar. Today, I went to Green Citizen for the first time to recycle my monitor, hard drives, and cell phones. They recycled all my items (some for free) for a very small fee. The team member who assisted me today was very friendly and took the time to explain the different services they offer. I’ll be coming back for sure!
The staff at Green Citizen were incredibly informative, helpful and courteous. The process of dropping off computers and hard drives for destruction was so quick and simple. They have an efficient set up. I highly recommend them and I will definitely be going back to them when I have additional items to recycle. It’s an impressive organization.
