Germany hits record solar installations in 2023, but wind power falls short of targets, eyeing reduced bureaucracy.

Germany's solar and wind energy sectors experienced contrasting fortunes in 2023. While solar installations set a new record, wind power lagged behind government targets. This was announced by industry associations, with an optimistic outlook for the coming year.

The country's ambitious goal is to source 80% of electricity from renewables by 2030. In 2023, renewables covered 52% of its electricity needs.

statement
The solar sector saw remarkable growth. Over a million new solar systems were installed, generating 14 GW of energy. This marks an 85% increase from the previous year. The boom was largely driven by residential solar demand. According to the BSW Solar Power Association, Germany is on track to achieve its 2030 solar goals.

Residential installations contributed significantly, with 7 GW installed, a 135% increase year-on-year. Solar parks added 4.3 GW, up 40% from 2022. BSW expects further growth in solar demand, citing a survey indicating over 1.5 million homeowners planning installations.

Carsten Koernig, BSW head, anticipates a continued solar surge in 2024. He calls for easing bureaucratic hurdles, especially in establishing solar parks.

However, the wind power sector faced challenges. Although tender awards for wind reached a record 6.4 GW, they fell short of the government's 10 GW annual target for 2030. This was reported by the wind power association BWE.

BWE noted that laws aimed at reducing bureaucracy in the wind sector are still pending. Recent legislation hasn't yet shown full effectiveness. Baerbel Heidebroek, BWE head, expressed optimism for 2024. She stressed the need for quicker approvals, conservation measures, and repowering to achieve greater success.
