There is good news from Vietnam about the world’s first biodegradable coffee face mask.

In a world where wearing face masks will become a normal part of life, there is good news from Vietnam where a company has jumped on the opportunity to make the world’s first biodegradable mask.

And it gets better.

The company makes the face masks from the waste that comes out of industrial-scale coffee factories.

The Star has published information about some great sales numbers for the coffee grounds face mask manufacturer.

“Branded AirX, the mask is made using coffee waste collected from huge Vietnamese coffee factories, which is then spun into yarn to create a covering that is antibacterial, reusable and biodegradable.

Two months after launching, the company has already sold more than 500,000 masks, which are on sale for around US$4 (RM17) apiece. It’s also exporting them to 10 different countries, in addition to its made-from-coffee ShoeX footwear, costing around US$90 (RM385) or more.”

The irony is that the company initially developed these masks to help the Vietnamese in cities deal better with air pollution.

Little did they know that the same concepts would make the masks perfectly suitable for protection from viruses as well.

And in light of marine conservation groups in Asia already noting huge increases in discarded face masks polluting the ocean, this innovation could get ahead of a problem that is only just emerging.
