At GreenCitizen, our mission is to make every day Earth Day by providing actionable information and introducing green products and services that can help every person and business — in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond — to live a greener life and reduce damage to the environment.
Broadening Our Mission
GreenCitizen’s mission was always above and beyond being just another recycling center. Since our inception in 2005, we’ve diverted over 32.1 million pounds of electronics from local landfills and global dumps. We’ve extended the life of over 361,207 reusable computers and electronic devices, while serving over 410,656 consumers and 70,130 businesses in the SF Bay Area. GreenCitizen’s EcoCenter is staffed with knowledgeable environmental science graduates from top universities. Our people are there to help educate the public about how to be a green citizen every day.
In 2019, we’re expanding GreenCitizen’s mission to include sharing critical information and introducing green products in our green store that can help every person and business reduce their carbon footprint and take action in the face of global warming, runaway plastic pollution, and the e-waste crisis. Our “how to recycle” blog posts offer accessible, practical information and guidelines about buying, using, reducing, reusing, and recycling. GreenCitizen’s e-store introduces products and services to help everyone conveniently practice sustainable living.
GreenCitizen will continue to provide electronics recycling pickup services for Bay Area businesses, and we’ll continue to offer a convenient drop-off location and educational opportunity for consumers at our Burlingame Recycling Center/ EcoCenter.
How We Work
GreenCitizen is 100% self-sustaining, without government funding or donations. We cover our operational expenses with revenues generated by reselling 10% of the newer recycled computers and electronics that come to our recycling center, and through our partnerships in introducing green products and services.
GreenCitizen’s staff are well educated and passionate about protecting the environment. Many of our team members hold degrees in environmental science and related majors from top universities in the U.S. and around the world. They proactively engage with our business pickup and EcoCenter customers to discuss solutions, products, and services that can help them live a greener life, reduce humanity’s carbon footprint, and make every day Earth Day.
