Amazon is about to launch a $2 billion venture capital fund for technology investments that help reduce the climate change impact and support sustainable development.

Delivering more than 10 billion items a year, Amazon has a gigantic transportation and data center footprint that often comes under pressure from environmental activists and its own employees who appeal to the company to take positive action.

This Amazon investment is a huge leap in that direction.

NBC News reports that the company has promised to be net carbon neutral by 2040.

“The Climate Pledge Fund will invest in companies across industries such as transportation and logistics, energy, storage and utilization, manufacturing and materials, and food and agriculture, the e-commerce giant said.”

In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos said that every prospective Amazon investment will be valued on its ability to speed up the path to zero carbon and help save the planet for future generations.

Earlier this year, Bezos pledged about $10 billion to fund scientists, activists, and non-profit organizations that are committed to protecting the environment.
