Driving Sustainability Forward: How Half Moon Bay Leads by Example
Half Moon Bay, a scenic coastal city in San Mateo County, is more than just a breathtaking destination—it’s a community deeply rooted in environmental responsibility. With a population of just over 11,000, this eco-conscious city leads by example in sustainable living and responsible waste management.
In 2019, Half Moon Bay adopted the Sustainability Implementation Plan (SIP)—a forward-thinking roadmap to reduce emissions, boost energy efficiency, and promote green practices citywide. Major milestones include converting 200+ streetlights to LED and unveiling San Mateo County’s first Zero-Net Energy public library, setting new benchmarks in energy-smart infrastructure.
The city’s achievements haven’t gone unnoticed. As a participant in California’s Beacon Program, Half Moon Bay earned Platinum-level recognition for cutting community greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, along with Gold status for innovative sustainability practices.
Residents and local businesses also play a vital role. Through the San Mateo County Green Business Program, companies receive guidance to meet green certification standards—showing that sustainability isn’t just policy here, it’s a way of life.
When it comes to computer recycling in Half Moon Bay, the city offers convenient, compliant, and eco-friendly options. From laptops to monitors, e-waste disposal is supported through twice-yearly Community Recycling Events for residential drop-offs.
These efforts align with California’s strict e-waste laws, which prohibit electronics from landfills due to hazardous components like lead and mercury. Half Moon Bay ensures full environmental compliance, protecting both public health and natural ecosystems.
Whether you’re a resident upgrading tech or a business managing old IT assets, Half Moon Bay stands out as a leader in sustainable electronics recycling, inspiring other cities to follow its green path.
Tech Meets Tide: Half Moon Bay Recycles with Purpose — at GreenCitizen
Tucked between ocean cliffs and farmland, Half Moon Bay is a community that understands the importance of protecting what’s natural—especially in a world powered by tech. Whether it’s your home office laptop or decades-old desktop, responsible electronics recycling is part of living sustainably here on the Coastside.
GreenCitizen proudly supports computer recycling in Half Moon Bay, offering ethical, transparent, and local recycling solutions for laptops, desktops, and anything with a plug or battery. Whether you’re a solopreneur along Highway 1 or cleaning out your garage above the bluffs, we make it easy to recycle with confidence.
Since 2005, we’ve helped over 70,000 Bay Area businesses and 400,000 residents recycle responsibly—keeping more than 32 million pounds of e-waste out of landfills. Everything we collect is processed locally in the Bay Area—never exported, never dumped.
Our work in the region once included drop-off sites at 801 Mahler Road, Burlingame, CA and 1576 Rollins Road, Burlingame, CA—locations that helped build the early momentum for the zero-waste movement now sweeping the Bay Area.
Today, Half Moon Bay residents can recycle electronics at our Burlingame EcoCenter (1831 Old Bayshore Hwy, Suite 2, Burlingame, CA 94010), just up Highway 92.
For local businesses, our pickup service includes GreenCitizen’s Total Accountability Management System (GTAMS), which offers certified data destruction, audit-ready compliance, and peace of mind under California’s strict e-waste laws.
Laptop and desktop recycling is free for qualifying items. In Half Moon Bay, where nature and innovation live side by side, GreenCitizen helps you keep both in balance.

They were awesome. I was helping clean my mother in laws garage out. There was one tv that was literally falling apart. No problem here. We dropped off a couple tvs, a monitor, coffee machine, an old speaker, all for around 11 dollars. We rounded up to $15 to help them continue their excellent recycling service. They were friendly helpful and have a drive through. We are customers now! Good location as well.
Awesome experience!!! Had an old CRT-TV that I needed to get rid of. Pulled up and they came to the car and pulled it out. Friendly and helpful! Will definitely bring all ewaste to Green Citizen in the future.
I’ve been to GreenCitizen a few times now to drop off old electronics and cables. They’ve been wonderful every time. You simply pull up in your car, someone will come out to help process your drop off. Every time has been less than 10 minutes and very pleasant customer service. Safe, quick, efficient, no hassle. Wonderful.
