Leading by Example: San Jose’s Push for Electronics Recycling and Climate Action
While San Jose powers Silicon Valley’s digital future, it’s also building one of the greenest urban landscapes in the U.S. With over one million residents and a thriving commercial core rooted in tech and manufacturing, San Jose has become a recognized leader in sustainability—and its accolades prove it.
The city earned a spot on the 2023 CDP A List, ranked as the sixth greenest U.S. city by WalletHub, and received The Climate Registry’s Leadership Award. Its sustainability leader, Kerrie Romanow, was honored as Woman of the Year (2024) for her work on climate resilience. San Jose also ranks in the top five nationally for solar power per capita and holds every badge from the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy.
Driving these efforts is Climate Smart San José, an ambitious initiative to slash carbon emissions, improve air quality, and conserve resources. This works in tandem with the city’s Zero Waste Element, targeting carbon neutrality by 2030 through smarter consumption, waste reduction, and aggressive landfill diversion.
Efforts extend to electronics as well—computer recycling in San Jose is gaining traction among both residents and businesses. Programs like San José Clean Energy, which ranks sixth nationally in green power, and events run by community groups continue to make e-waste recycling more accessible citywide.
California’s Electronic Waste Recycling Act ensures devices with hazardous components are processed safely, reinforcing San Jose’s local commitment with statewide regulation.
From ENERGY STAR buildings to neighborhood e-waste drives, sustainability is more than a buzzword here—it’s a blueprint. San Jose is showing how innovation, policy, and public action can align to make a city smarter, cleaner, and greener.

That’s why GreenCitizen proudly provides certified, ethical computer recycling in San Jose, designed for eco-conscious businesses and residents who care where their electronics end up.
In the last two decades, we’ve empowered over 70,000 Bay Area businesses and 400,000 residents to recycle responsibly—diverting more than 32 million pounds of e-waste from landfills. We recycle laptops, desktops, and virtually any device with a plug or battery, always processed locally—never exported, never dumped.
We’ve built deep roots across the Bay Area. Our former locations— 5155 Stevens Creek Blvd, Ste 100, Santa Clara; 2500 W El Camino Real, Suite D, Mountain View; 4500 El Camino Real, Los Altos; 161 Homer Avenue, Downtown Palo Alto; and 3180 Park Boulevard, Palo Alto (behind the former Fry’s Electronics)—helped lay the foundation for responsible recycling in communities near San Jose.
Today, San Jose businesses and residents are just a quick trip away from our main hub: the Burlingame EcoCenter, located at 1831 Old Bayshore Hwy, Suite 2, Burlingame, CA 94010.
Businesses can schedule electronics pickups powered by our GreenCitizen Total Accountability Management System (GTAMS)—a proprietary tool that ensures certified data destruction, total compliance with California e-waste laws, and full transparency from pickup to processing.
For San Jose residents, we offer convenient, no-appointment drop-offs. And best of all—recycling laptops and desktops is completely free.

Awesome environmental conservation company helping to keep our landfills free of e-waste & non-biodegradable plastics. Needed to recycle two broken flatscreen televisions and two huge bags of styrofoam. GreenCitizen’s website was easy to navigate, clear as to what items they are able to take, and upfront about any fees on certain items. Drop-off was made easy by filling-out the online form prior to my visit. Staff was extremely helpful, attentive, and friendly. Fee for the amount of styrofoam I brought was very reasonable & well worth it knowing it will be recycled & repurposed. Fees for “non-free items” are far more reasonable than the green line station! I was in & out in 10 minutes. Great company doing great things for our environment! Overall great experience.
They were awesome. I was helping clean my mother in laws garage out. There was one tv that was literally falling apart. No problem here. We dropped off a couple tvs, a monitor, coffee machine, an old speaker, all for around 11 dollars. We rounded up to $15 to help them continue their excellent recycling service. They were friendly helpful and have a drive through. We are customers now! Good location as well.
I love that there is a place to recycle electronic items responsibly. No overseas shipments; all are disassembled here and taken care of in an environmentally sound way. The small price they charge is totally worth the environmental impact. It’s not realistic to think there is no cost for safe disposal. Very helpful staff, easy to drive in, safe and fast. I appreciate the data destruction option, too.
