San Carlos Leads the Way in Electronics Recycling and Sustainability
San Carlos, nestled in the heart of Silicon Valley, has earned a reputation as a forward-thinking community dedicated to sustainability and environmental stewardship. With a population exceeding 28,000, the city harmoniously blends its rich history with a commitment to green initiatives, making it a model for responsible urban living.
The city’s dedication to sustainability is evident in its proactive community engagement. Residents concerned about climate change established San Carlos Green, a community task force collaborating with the city to implement eco-friendly actions. This partnership has fostered a culture where environmental responsibility is a shared priority among citizens and local authorities.
San Carlos has set ambitious targets through its Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Plan (CMAP), aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 and 80% by 2050, relative to 1990 levels. The CMAP outlines strategies to achieve these goals, including energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable infrastructure development.
California’s Electronic Waste Recycling Act mandates the proper disposal of electronic devices and imposes recycling fees at the point of sale to fund safe recycling practices. San Carlos adheres to these regulations, ensuring that both businesses and residents comply with state mandates for e-waste disposal.
Local businesses in San Carlos are increasingly adopting corporate sustainability programs, recognizing the importance of responsible e-waste disposal. Companies are implementing internal recycling initiatives and partnering with certified recyclers to manage electronic waste effectively, contributing to the city’s overall environmental goals.
San Carlos’s commitment to environmental responsibility has garnered recognition, including being honored as a ‘Beacon’ of sustainability. This acknowledgment reflects the city’s successful implementation of green programs and climate protection projects, setting an example for other communities.
Through collaborative efforts between residents, businesses, and local government, San Carlos continues to lead in sustainability and responsible electronics recycling, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to preserving the environment for future generations.

Awesome environmental conservation company helping to keep our landfills free of e-waste & non-biodegradable plastics. Needed to recycle two broken flatscreen televisions and two huge bags of styrofoam. GreenCitizen’s website was easy to navigate, clear as to what items they are able to take, and upfront about any fees on certain items. Drop-off was made easy by filling-out the online form prior to my visit. Staff was extremely helpful, attentive, and friendly. Fee for the amount of styrofoam I brought was very reasonable & well worth it knowing it will be recycled & repurposed. Fees for “non-free items” are far more reasonable than the green line station! I was in & out in 10 minutes. Great company doing great things for our environment! Overall great experience.
Been here multiple times for home and small business. So easy and simple to fill out the form and drop-off isn’t DIY, they come out to your car and take care of everything! Always recommended and candidly, better than my local Scavenger.
Green Citizen makes electronics drop-off easy and friendly. We’ve been taking our stuff there for years. Best of all, I have confidence that they handle everything appropriately and responsibly. I’m happy to pay to dispose of things like old video tapes with them because I know how they will treat my discards – with as little environmental impact as possible.
