San Mateo’s Commitment to E-Waste Recycling
San Mateo is a city dedicated to sustainability, waste reduction, and responsible e-waste recycling. With a population of over 100,000 residents and a thriving business sector—including technology startups, corporate offices, and retail hubs—the city has taken significant steps to minimize electronic waste and environmental impact.
San Mateo’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) and Community Climate Action Plan (CCAP) outline a strategic roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45% and improve waste management. A key focus is on diverting electronics from landfills and ensuring that old computers, laptops, and other e-waste are properly recycled. The city partners with organizations to provide free e-waste collection events and convenient drop-off locations for residents.
Businesses and residents in San Mateo actively participate in electronics recycling programs, ensuring that outdated devices do not contribute to landfill pollution. Many local companies have integrated corporate sustainability programs to properly dispose of outdated IT equipment and office electronics through certified e-waste recyclers.
San Mateo County has also reinforced these efforts by mandating that all e-waste collected in unincorporated areas be processed by certified recyclers. Additionally, hazardous waste drop-off events make it easier for residents to safely dispose of computers, monitors, and other electronic devices while complying with California’s Electronic Waste Recycling Act.
With strong environmental policies, business engagement, and community-driven recycling efforts, San Mateo continues to set an example in responsible e-waste management. By prioritizing sustainability, zero waste goals, and e-waste reduction initiatives, the city remains at the forefront of environmental stewardship.

Recycling electronics is no longer burdensome thanks to this place! They are extremely convenient and the person who helped me out at the front was very kind and courteous. I pulled up and dropped off a bunch of computers I had lying around and they are able to destroy the hard drive for me and recycle my computer. They also took a bunch of smaller electronics from me. Extremely glad I found them!!!
Green citizen has the best customer service/drop off on the peninsula. I would highly recommend using their service. I am a consultant to the tech industry in my small to medium business often has older computers or computer monitors to be recycled. They take the hassle out of green recycling.
They were awesome. I was helping clean my mother in laws garage out. There was one tv that was literally falling apart. No problem here. We dropped off a couple tvs, a monitor, coffee machine, an old speaker, all for around 11 dollars. We rounded up to $15 to help them continue their excellent recycling service. They were friendly helpful and have a drive through. We are customers now! Good location as well.
